Wood Ducks (Aix sponsa)
It’s MUG Monday darlings and to start the week let’s take a look at one of the FIERCEST little ducks in the kingdom the ✨WOOD DUCK✨
Wood ducks (Aix sponsa) is well knows for their stunning and intricate plumage, bold markings and undoubtably fierce mug!
These little divas can be found in wooded swamps, marshes, streams, beaver ponds, and small lakes, where they nest in tree cavities and nest boxes, you thought they were going to nest on the ground? Girl please.
Here in Oregon we can see this stunning ducks year round and their populations are stable, and even increasing in some areas!
Conservation check point!
Even though this species in not “in danger” does not mean that their habitat isn’t! Like I said, they love nesting in trees, specifically they love nesting in old pileated woodpecker nests! These nests are built in dead and dying trees by the water, which people like to tear down for aesthetic reasons. You know what’s aesthetic? Look at that cut babe! That green shimmer? That red liner?! Wildlife and a biodiverse ecosystem is all the aesthetic we need 👏
